The Territorial Hotel Company opened the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on February 1, 1927, bringing luxury accommodations to Waikiki. The Great Depression struck hard in 1929, bankrupting the Territorial Hotel Company, and they sold the hotel to the Matson Navigation Company. The United States military took over the hotel during World War II and used it as a recreation and relaxation center for sailors and soldiers serving in the Pacific theater. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel has appeared in many movies and television shows including Charlie Chan’s Black Camel, Gidget Goes Hawaiian, Hawaii Five-0, Charlie’s Angels, and Murder She Wrote. The hotel was even featured in a 1952 Tom & Jerry cartoon.
