Hurricane Sandy (unofficially called “Superstorm Sandy”) was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 hurricane season. It tracked up the entire eastern coast bringing destruction to every state from Florida to Maine.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed the pier in New Jersey that had previously supported the Star Jet Roller Coaster, leaving the roller coaster sitting in the Atlantic ocean. To bring attention to the hurricane recovery efforts a local resident swam out to the roller coaster, climbed it, and planted a US flag at the top. He was arrested.
Since then the pier and the rollercoaster have been replaced.
