Affectionately known to locals as the Pink Palace, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel opened in 1927. During WWII the navy office of recreation and morale leased the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and used it as a rest and relaxation center for the Navy. During the war multiple coils of barbed wire stretched along Waikiki Beach, and swimmers had to check with local authorities to learn the locations where they could pass through the barbed wire to the beach. In 1947 the hotel was restored and reopened to the public.
The Royal Hawaiian Hotel has been featured in many movies and TV shows including Charlie Chan, Gidget Goes Hawaiian, Hawaii Five-0, and Charlie’s Angels. It was even featured in a Tom & Jerry cartoon.
