- The SS Independence and the SS Constitution cruised the Hawaiian Islands during the 1980s and early 1990s. They cruised the Hawaiian Islands in counter-cyclical rotations, so they were rarely in the same harbor at the same time. This painting captures one of the few times that both ships were in Honolulu Harbor at the same time.
- Both ships were built by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Quincy Massachusetts in 1951. Both served the New York to Europe cruise market before moving to Hawaii. The SS Constitution was featured on TV episodes of I Love Lucy and Magnum PI.
- The SS Constitution sank 700 miles north of Oahu in 1995 while being towed to a scrap yard.
- The SS Independence grounded on a reef near Alang India while on the way to a scrap yard. It was so badly damaged that it was scuttled nearby.
